The Friends of Writtle Parish Church Patron: Lord Petre |
|||||||
|
The Friends were established in
1995 under the patronage of Lord Petre to raise funds for the
restoration and preservation of the fabric of All Saints, Writtle Parish
Church. It is known that a church existed
on the site over 800 years ago. It
is, therefore, a very important part of our village heritage and
deserves preservation, not least as the oldest building in Writtle.
Funds are raised from a variety events which enhance the social
activities of the parish, and by inviting people to become ‘Friends’
who are concerned about the “well being” of this ancient building. Since our inauguration the
Friends have succeeded in raising more than £90,000. This has enabled the Parochial Church Council to undertake
much needed work on the south aisle roof and on the walls, as well as
the rewiring of the building.
The most recent quinquennial
inspection revealed the need to replace the tower roof and
undertake remedial work on the walls of the tower (while scaffolding is
in place). The opportunity
will also be taken to construct a sound lantern to improve the overall
audibility of the bells. This work has been estimated to
cost £100,000 in total. An
Appeal was launched at the end of March by Lord Petre. Forthcoming Fundraising Events
