A Quilt for Writtle [Extract
from All Saints Writtle by Stuart Platt, pub 1992]
A pictorial quilt of Writtle, made by four friends
who live in the village, is on permanent display on the wall of the
North Chancel behind the organ. The quilt was created by Annie Bailey,
Anne Beere, Tricia Stephens and Jeanne Jones who are delighted that
their tribute to the close-knit, colourful and distinctive community
spirit of Writtle is on show at the heart of the village.
The idea for the quilt originally came about at an
exhibition in 1995 when the foursome admired some quilts made for other
villages. They agreed that Writtle was a great inspiration and that they
would embark on a pictorial style quilt to mark the Millennium, but the
project took rather longer than anticipated.
There was no formal plan and the quilt evolved in
an enjoyable way, with the focus on shared friendship and an
amalgamation of skills and interests. The final stitches were put in at
the beginning of 2002 and an oak case was custom made for the quilt by
Phil Stephens, Tricia's husband. A grant of £200 for materials for the
case had kindly been given by Writtle Parish
Council [external website]. The quilt and its
case were unveiled at a service in All Saints Church in May 2002 and it
was on show on the village green in June for the Jubilee celebrations.
It is hoped that it will be enjoyed by villagers and visitors to the
church for many years to come.
