Font
[Extract from All Saints Writtle by
Stuart Platt, pub 1992]
Near the old Rood screen staircase beside the
Carpenter Chapel stands the font, a relic from the Norman building. It
is of Caen stone, and dates from about 1170. As a result of having been
outside the church at some time, it is badly weathered, and was given a
new base in 1869. Nevertheless, it is the font in which Writtle's young
have been baptised for well over 800 years.
